Overview


The Graduate Program in Biology: Wild Life Diversity and Management, with master's and doctoral degrees implemented in 2000 and 2006, respectively, and its three areas of study, is part of CAPES Biodiversity Area. In line with the Biodiversity Area guidelines and following Unisinos Strategic Planning for actions, particularly those concerning the Program sustainability and employment of new technologies, this program has 13 fully equipped research labs that help train and prepare qualified professionals for scientific research, higher education teaching and use of technology in the context of biodiversity conservation and management. Our academic staff, with high scientific qualification and an emphasis on technology applied to environmental issues, includes ecologists, zoologists, geneticists and microbiologists engaged in national and international integration programs.

Areas of Study


I. Systematics and Phylogeny:
Inventory and development of neotropical biota taxonomical studies. Analysis of their phylogenetic relations based on morphological, ecological, and molecular data in a biogeographical context. Study of functional morphology and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on neotropical organisms;

II. Communities and Population Ecology:
Acknowledgement of patterns and processes regarding the structure and functioning of populations and communities. Analysis of the effects brought by anthropic and natural disturbances in the dynamics of groups of organisms. Identification of reproductive models & strategies, as well as spatial-temporal distribution of species;

III. Conservation and Management:
Development of studies focusing on the conservation of species and ecosystems. Recognition of priority areas for conservation. Development of management practices to monitor and minimize impacts on biodiversity. Setting up interactions with the production sector for the sustainable use of natural resources.

Larissa Rosa de Oliveira
PhD in Biological Sciences, with a Post-Doctoral Degree in Conservation Genetics of Marine Mammals.
Areas of Interest: Conducts research on conservation biology and natural history of aquatic mammals, with an emphasis on genetics, morphometry, feeding ecology, age determination and demographics of species in this group.

PhD in Ecology.
Areas of Interest: Develops studies on the structure patterns of terrestrial vertebrate communities with an emphasis on amphibians and reptiles. Also researches natural history and behavior within the field of herpetology.

Ana Maria Leal-Zanchet
PhD in Natural Sciences - Zoology, with a Post-Doctoral Degree in Recent Group Taxonomy.
Areas of Interest: Develops studies on animal reproduction and on the systematics, ecology and distribution of triclads, aiming to enhance the inventory of the southern Brazilian fauna for this group of invertebrates and their use as indicators of environmental conditions.

PhD in Biological Sciences.
Areas of Interest: Develops studies in the area of ecology of aquatic invertebrates, with an emphasis on biomonitoring of water quality and restoration of degraded aquatic ecosystems. Conducts research on the macroinvertebrate community in natural wetlands and rice fields in southern Brazil.

PhD in Animal Biology, with a Post-Doctoral Degree in Zoology and Taxonomy of Recent Groups.
Areas of Interest: Conducts research in the areas of taxonomy, ecology and systematics of Neotropical spiders, focusing on the description of the biodiversity of families Linyphiidae and Theridiidae. Develops studies on spider biodiversity and ecology in agroecosystems and natural environments.

Maurício Roberto Veronez
PhD in Science - Zoology.
Areas of Interest: Received his Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Geoinformatics, postdoc in Geomatics, where he cocreated and coheads the Multidisciplinary Advanced Visualization and GeoInformatics Laboratory. His research interests include Geoprocessing applied in modeling and ecological simulation based on: 1) processing and manipulation of digital imaging generated from embedded remote sensors; 2) Artificial Intelligence for Pattern Recognition; 3) Immersive Virtual Reality and Interactive 3D Visualization.

Master's Degree

The master's degree consists of 24 credits, including thesis. Students must complete Required Courses (3 courses, worth 6 credits), Required Courses with choice (with choice of activities totaling 11 credits) and Optional Courses (with choice of activities totaling 9 credits). Thesis, developed throughout the course, is worth 4 credits.
