Overview

Based on inter and transdisciplinary perspectives, Unisinos Graduate Program in Applied Linguistics encompasses the levels of Master and Doctoral Degrees. It promotes investigations in the area of language to qualify professionals in the field of Languages, as well as in other fields, who are interested in studying language. The program, which is recommended by CAPES with grade 5, presupposes the expansion of areas related to the studies of language, as it focuses on technologies and interaction.

Thus, it opens the possibility of innovative works in the area, such as the ones that propose interfaces with textual issues, information technologies, and specialized languages terminologies. The relation with the body of research that investigates interactional events that determine relations in the world of work is also investigated. Aiming to further advance investigations in Applied Linguistics, the Program encompasses research about several themes based on different theories that feed their areas of research. It is the only Graduate Program to offer a Doctoral Degree in Applied Linguistics in the south of the country.

Areas of Study

Language and School Practices
The objective of this area of study is to develop research to investigate linguistic phenomena in the language teaching-learning scope in formal or informal educational contexts. Studies of discourse practice and interaction in the school environment are carried out, taking into account their relations with historical and sociocultural contexts.

Text, Lexicon, and Technology
The objective of this area of study is to develop research to investigate linguistic phenomena in the scope of the text, considered as a fundamental communicative unit in human language, organized at the macro and microstructural levels and situated in interactional contexts. Texts are studied in terms of their organization, discursive processes, and recursiveness phenomena, seeing them as open, dynamic, and complex systems.

Interaction and Discourse Practices
The objective of this area of study is to develop research to investigate discourse practices under the perspective of interaction, which is understood as an interactional event in itself and as a constitutive dimension of subject and meaning. Research developed in this area conjugate, at the micro and macro levels, interactional practices in different contexts, such as company, family, school, hospitals, and offices.

Curricular Structure for the Master's Degree Program Back to menu

Master's Degree

The Master's Degree Program consists of 30 credits, including thesis. Students may take Required Courses (Two courses, relating to 6 credits), Optional Courses (up to 18 credits or 6 courses), scientific production dissemination activities (up to 3 credits), and courses connected with other Graduate Programs (up to 6 credits). The thesis, developed throughout the course, consists of six credits.

Doctoral Degree

The Doctoral Degree consists of 30 credits, including dissertation. Students must write the dissertation (six credits); and the other activities to be taken (24 credits) must be related to the project. For these activities, up to eight credits taken during the Master's Degree may be used.
