Explore Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Globally famous for its Churrasco (Brazilian Barbecue), Porto Alegre offers far more than culinary treats. A great sunset awaits you every evening at the Usina do Gasômetro, an old coal power plant turned in a cultural center with a cinema, theaters, exhibits and cultural events. The main museum, the Fundação Iberê Camargo, is a cultural institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the work of Brazilian painter Iberê Camargo and encouraging reflections on modern art through exhibits, classes, seminars and meetings. The Mercado Público is located in the heart of downtown Porto Alegre. It is a neoclassical building that opened in 1869. With over 100 shops and stores, there is great variety of options: restaurants with natural foods, fruit, fish stores, a famous ice cream parlor, and delicious coffee called Café do Mercado.

Those who enjoy outdoor activities will be happy to know that it is a very green city due to its many parks and trees. Parque da Redenção is the largest urban park in Porto Alegre. The park is full of people walking, talking and drinking chimarrão (known elsewhere as yerba mate), especially on sunny mornings. The main activities that take place in the park occur in the Araujo Viana Auditorium (concerts, performances and meetings). There is also a famous flea market called Brique da Redenção, which is open every Sunday starting at 9:00 am. There are dozens of stalls selling crafts, art, souvenirs, food and antiques, all along Avenida Jose Bonifacio. The city offers a variety of shopping centers, such as Iguatemi, Barra Shopping, Moinhos de Vento and Praia de Belas.

Porto Alegre is home to two World Champion football teams, Grêmio and Internacional. The national soccer championship, the Brasileirão, will be played throughout the year, and some games will be hosted in Porto Alegre. We offer the opportunity to visit both stadiums, and also watch one of the Brasileirão games, Internacional vs Flamengo. Southern Brazil is the homeland of Gaucho culture. It is a strong culture, which began in the mid-18th century. We invite all students to learn more about our culture during a dinner at the 35 CTG. A CTG (Center for Gaucho Traditions) is responsible for maintaining and spreading our traditions. At a CTG, you can enjoy Churrasco (Brazilian Barbecue) during a traditional musical dance performance.
